UMS Student ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Hirosaki, Japan | i just wanted to start a thread where people can put down some of there own poetry or someone elses poetry that has touched them and they would like to share.here is one i wrote some years ago, it was meant to sound mundane and unappealing. with no beginning, and no end, where are we? we are.

| That is sort of like a zen koan, NothingEverything! A simple four line poem that is meant to make the spiritual seeker contemplate its meaning. Great idea, starting a thread on poetry! Thanx for thinking of it! I write a lot of poetry and of course there are so few outlets besides an open mic to share it! Here's a little poetry of mine... Stillness swallows my mind, and I lose my place in time, Wind blows through my soul, and says what can't be told, My heart opens to the sky, and takes my inner sight, into the place where I live into the place where I give, the place where I never die... | |||

UMS Student ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Hirosaki, Japan | Here is another one that touches my heart when i read it, it was written by a butcher many many years ago in japan who lost himself while butchering animals and suddenly attained enlightenment through his still mind, this was written right after he was awakened, this is also his first poem. Just yesterday the soul of a demon, This morning, the face of a bodhsavvta, a demon, a bodhsavvta... there is no difference. Edited by NothingEverything 3/26/2006 7:21 AM

| Was that by Shakespeare? | |||

| It was! Here's the whole thing if anyone would like it: They That Have Power To Hurt And Will Do None They that have power to hurt and will do none, That do not do the thing they most do show, Who, moving others, are themselves as stone, Unmoved, cold, and to temptation slow; They rightly do inherit heaven's graces And husband nature's riches from expense; They are the lords and owners of their faces, Others but stewards of their excellence. The summer's flower is to the summer sweet, Though to itself it only live and die, But if that flower with base infection meet, The basest weed outbraves his dignity: For sweetest things turn sourest by their deeds; Lilies that fester smell far worse than weeds. Very nice. Thanks Nothing. Very nice sonnet indeed. | |||

UMS Student ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: Hirosaki, Japan | here is a nice one by Matsuo Basho, the thing about haiku is, it may seem mundane to the reader at first, but the beauty of the poetry is the disattachment of the poet from the poetry, it is meant to be a very pure, moment, a capturing of a certain moment in time. Haiku should more be felt then read, they are very short, but the say so much. banana leaves hanging around my hut- must be moon-viewing.

They do not lie, but they do not tell the truth; They do not take, but they do not give either; They neither steal nor stop a thief; They do not rock the boat, and never pull an oar; They will not drag you down, but always let you draw them - And should the effort kill you, it’s tough luck on you. They do not hurt you, but they refuse to help; They do not hate you, but they cannot love you either; They will not burn you, but happily fiddle, while you burn; And they never volunteer for anything. Do you know what they are? They are the sins of omission folks: Spiritual voids, neither good nor bad, They stand still and stagnate. Because they never risk anything, They neither learn nor grow! At least, the good keep trying, And the bad in their own way, work just as hard, But at least both are based on action and conviction. So, please God, send me either a sinner or a Saint, And protect me against the nothing-people.

UMS Guest Posts: 1938 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: United Kingdom | I AM … I am not the picture on my passport; I am not my qualifications or titles; I am not the stories that people spread about me; I am not in the judgments of pointed fingers or facts of any kind; I cannot be put into numbers, labels, or types and orders; I am not in knowing and cannot be known by knowledge of mind; To experience and meet me as who I truly am You can only find out Through the knowledge within your heart; It alone knows how to love someone of its own kind ... I am an experience – a feeling, a wave and a vibration; I can be a tear or a smile; A flower, a tree or a butterfly; The sea and the open sky; Or the wind that caresses your hair; I am what I love and also what I am afraid of within me; I am me – anything and anyone I want to be ... Don’t tell me who I should be; Don’t mention my limits, my scale, my size or who I can be. Love me the way I am, as the experience that I am; Give me the freedom and the space to be myself. If you wish to know me, come towards me with a hug and a smile, So I can recognise you. Then share a caring word with me And let me lead you to the place and the experience That is ‘me’... | When we talk about the witness in our verse, we talk about you. A pure heart and a noble demeanor cannot compete with your radiant face. They will ask you what you have produced. Say to them, except for Love, what else can a Lover produce? Rumi Edited by elevennevele 11/11/2006 12:10 AM

| Morning Enlightenment A Masterpiece in process, Constructed while floating on the ocean, A connection so vast There is no beginning or end… Yet the experience of love, Total commitment to one’s own heart, Greets the sun as it rises And lights us all In the glow of your morning smile… | |||

UMS Student Posts: 101 ![]() Location: Somerset England | I love this one, it touched me I was in very difficult space IF If you can keep your head when all about you Are losing theirs and blaming it on you. If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, But make allowance for their doubting too; If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies, Or being hated, don’t give way to hating, And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise: If you can dream - and not make dreams your master; If you can think - and not make thoughts your aim; If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster And treat those two imposters just the same; If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken Twisted by Knaves to make a trap for fools, Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, And stoop and build ‘em up with worn-out tools: If you can make one heap of all your winnings And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss, And lose, and start again at your beginnings And never breathe a word about your loss; If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew To serve your turn long after they are gone, And so hold on when there is nothing in you Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’ If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue, Or walk with Kings - nor lose the common touch, If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you, If all men count with you, but none too much; If you can fill the unforgiving minute With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run, Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it, And - which is more - you’ll be a Man, my son! | Your mind creation is pure elation As your intentions flow, and we share where to go – It’s an example you set, That gives what you get, That flow of love You are made of. The reflection you see Both of you and of me Gives shape to our work here And strength to your work peer As we reach to the world, With courses and rhymes, And work for the greater In this most giving time… With such gratitude We connect with vibration And no frustration As we share your elation.

| The Minimalist Thinker Everyday a million thoughts are running through my head. Of the bunch maybe a few thousand words are said. Perhaps only a hundred are really understood. And maybe ten of all those thoughts would do me any good. Edited by loving 4/10/2007 8:40 PM | |||
