Guys, look, by my calculation there are four of us who come on the public site and even less on the student side.

I do not know how Christine pays for this board, but (and no offense to any of us) if I were her I would shut it down.

Whatever students there are. are not vibrant and engaged enough to respond to anything in public and even less so in the student area.

But I would continue this forever, however in the coming age of austerity, with a benign but absent owner, four of us ain't going to hack it.

There was the gray haired lady who wrote a truth-a-gram about me in a controversy over a comment I made to Inky while  FireFox was a darling and Absy-Solvy ranted on and on  insulting Sunny, which was enough for me (I didn't care what the other ladies thought of Sunny.....Absolute was wrong) .....all memories that are only preserved in some bit and byte archive.

 Decide for Yourselves......

Marty (Love Never Dies....and all of my cats know that ...and ISIS does too though she might wish it not so.)

It's worth it to me. Is it worth it to you? Everyone doesn't love forums. They like the newer Venues. I prefer the forums over the other thing whose name escapes me, atm. Forums are more streamlined and organized to me. I'm going to go figure out the name of that other thing and come back. NING Network- that's what it is, but that doesn't seem very active, either. Peace out.

We still do get quite a few spammers that I have to block .... so clearly some out there follow what we do .... even if some do not post and might prefer to read, whilst others try to post misguidedly ...

Besides, who else might we talk to on such like minded themes and topics?!

Blessings and Light in a sometimes dark world ... (are the light/dark what we make them?)

I don't like facebook, either. I don't have a facebook account and I'm not getting one. If I ever do it will be for a business. Too much drama and invasion of privacy there, to me. Besides, anything whose name starts with the word face screams "look at me, LOOK at MEeee"... I know, it's just me, but I don't care.

Edited to add. I just looked at the link. Why is there a "dating ap for android" ad on the UMS facebook page? ugh.

Agreed Disa ... Fb seems like an invitation to invade/disclose privacy ... another of those "Screwtape" syndromes I think (from C S Lewis' brilliant 'Screwtape Letters') ...

... as for numbers here, Quality or quantity ?

...... also there were the Three (four) Musketeers, and the Magnificent Seven [Samurai], whose numbers were reduced, heroically...

Lucky to have this space ... I long ago thought that as CB is Gemini she cannot but help use all means of communication tools

Need to rest wrist been on here too long already ...

Hi Marty

'The Listeners' poem by the English poet [maybe by his name, of Hugenot descent, but that is my unsourced speculation: merely not wanting to misattribute ethnic and religous roots!]: Walter de la Mare, has been cited here before many moons ago: 'is there anybody there said the Traveller, knocking on the moonlit door'

Yet though I do happen to know via one personal instance [they will know who they are] that one of our dear Board members/silent listeners, was simply unable to post due to their private circumstances; I only know this via personal contact.

Simply 'not posting' is not necessarily an abrogation of community presence or partication, simply Being Here is the best that can be done: in some instances, in this writer's humble scope.

So Being Here virtually is great, actually: posting responses, new threads, attempting to spam or simply being quiet, still, reflecting and listening: each to their own.

'Is it worth it?': to which reply could be at what cost the "pearl of great price"?

Or in words from the film 'The Wind and the Lion', when the 'hero' and his warrior brother have lost everything, despite their struggles:

"...... have you never had everything in your life worth losing everything for.....?" [ both characters laugh to each other into the blowing wind, just the two of them silhouetted against the sunset as the end credits roll]

Blessings
O

Hiya Ophhhh.....
Spam is robotic for the most part and pan-Internet depending on what TCP/UDP ports you have open at any given time. To equate receiving a lot of spam to indicate the popularity or even recognition of a website is not tenable.

What if we were to say "simply not voting is not necessarily an abrogation of community presence or participation". Methinks the Brexit election and the Presidential election in the US speaks to that quite ably without my radical rhetoric.

Community starts with the exchange of sentiment, not necessarily like for like; and sometimes in opposition, and in other times confrontation. But, there is the element of dialogue. THAT is what community is about. Those that peek through the blinds and over the fence and lurk about need be invited to be part of the community.....because they are wanted, loved and cherished as one with us all. Those that refuse to embrace, cheat themselves and dim the spiritual light that those of this community seek to spread further and wider.

If our premier archivist remembers archively, Absolute (Absy-Solvy to me; and I DID read his buddys book that he dedicated to the Abs) sought to stand alone amidst the "us" at that time. I noticed very little resistance to to his constant insults and the hurt feelings he caused particularly against Sunny (who posted as Sunflower) and who was not well liked by one of the most senior posters and mods on this board. I spoke up and, eventually, some others did likewise. That is community at its worst and best all at the same time.

The metaphysical community needs to recognize that silence is no longer an option. But, if you still want to lurk, godspeed. When you are truly silenced by decree, by physical restraint, or buy the gun, remember that you read this....my words!

Peas and Porridge for the Tillerman,
Marty

Hi Marty

I seem to recall that neither I took unpleasantness lying down or in silence ... and occasionally risked opprobrium for so doing

"Those were the days my friend
I thought they'd never end
we'd sing and dance
Forever and a day"

[above lines from Paul McCartney .... sorry cannot cut and paste that lovely song from You Tube if it is there ... I took Ophi's post to include also some of us too incapacitated to post too freely due to such things as illness or injury, eg my fractured plastered wrist current, for which ongoing Reiki healing from Board members via the Reiki thread very much appreciated ]

Happy daze
Paul

I hope they do not take this forum down. It has way too much valuable information. I did ask for them to place a link to this forum on their front page of the new website. I do feel this site is priceless and less invaded by people unrelated to UMS directly. I do however love FB. I am on there a lot more and have direct communication with so many people whom I wouldn't any other way. I see value in both.

I did talk to Leo today.... he should be popping in soon!

Hello, I'm back again. Seem to fade in and out. Been busy with two new knee replacements and a couple of bad infections but here I am again. Hey Marty what's going on ? We have two new kittens making a total of eight now. Paul, talked to Jill earlier she said you had an accident, hope you're feeling better. Looking forward to more discussions and staying in touch. Had to have my password updated as I forgot the old one. Spent some time awhile back with Christine in Ecuador taught Reiki to a few folks. Have to catch up on stuff. Try to remember how this work. Blessings

glad your knees are healing Leo ...

musing again on the thread title in its widest sense:

Is the 'worth' of anything what we give to it? (think that is another way of re-stating Disa's original response) ...

Interesting tidbit of info......most pro and college athletes utilize professional training.....yet, knee injuries are quite common and an ACL tear is very serious and debilitating. Usually, it requires surgery, R&R, and rehabilitation.

BUT, then we come to Cynthia Rothrock, who is proficient in Tai Chi and it's martial arts children.

""In between filming Huang jia shi jie (1985) and Shanghai Express (1986), Rothrock ripped the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee. Turning down the option of reconstructive surgery because of her tight filming schedule, she amazed doctors by continuing to work without adverse effects. While the injury would normally have caused recurring dislocation of the kneecap, a study on her leg revealed that Rothrock's quadriceps and hamstrings were so strong that they held her kneecap in place even without the aid of the ligament. As of June 2012, Rothrock still had not undergone reconstructive surgery."" -quoted from IMDB

Peace,
Marty ("going to stand up next to a mountain and chop it down with the edge of my hand" -quoted from Jimi Hendrix

Marty, interesting info on Cynthia and as you stated her muscles were strong obviously from her working out. I'm certainly not into physical workoufs. I'm more into academics. Besides mine was from arthritis and the bone on bone crunching was a bit much. I didn't even have a right knee for a few months, just a spacer. Now with both total knee replacements I can get back on my feet so to speak.

I have been traveling a bit more California (x2), Washington DC and North Carolina. Enough about me, are you still at the University of Maryland? it seems apparent that you no longer have a cat (s). I'm sorry to hear or assume that. We lost one awhile back from cancer but have added two more and that makes it eight. Oh and a rescue dog (Beagle).
