PhD Alumni Posts: 4414 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Location: United Kingdom | Dear Anyone Who Reads This I see that Sir John Franklin's fabled but tragically lost North-West Passage ships might both at last have been found, the HMS Erebus and HMS Terror, thanks in part to local Inuk legend .. a fascinating piece of nautical history perhaps resolved at last .... And now it is also thought that they might have found the last site where the pioneer aviator Amelia Earhart may have departed this earth on a lonely atol in the South Pacific .... Which is by way of making a link to space travel, and a question I have long had about travelling at light speed and the unlikelihood of it being possible for a very mundane reason, which is, that any craft travelling at such a speed and beyond, must surely run the risk of hitting a fragment of space debris, comet, rock, speck of dust, or anything else that might cause disaster ... wondered if anyone had any ideas on that ....? New user Posts: 3 | Hi Paul, In speculation to time travel and Einstein's Law of special relativity going that speed a ship and human would have to be encased in an antigravity shield of some sort for the human body cannot handle the G-force. Also assumption that there would have to be a very sophisticated navigation system to avoid planets and stars. But as far as the dust and debris it would hit the shield and be reflected or disintegrated. Just speculation though.

Expert Posts: 2118 ![]() ![]() Location: The Heart of Space | Hi Pauly and LilWolfman, Down to earth, one of my favorite authors (Dan Simmons) has a door stop novel entitled "The Terror" which fictionally recounts Sir John's travails. In the Dan Simmons tradition he gives the hostile environment a persona and corporeality. Very deep book if you have lots of time to read it . I won't belabor the Einstein fallacies (particularly about time) , but I will ask another question to raise a point which involves these concepts in an obtuse manner. I hope that new students join in as it seems we have a few....... I am a time traveler and I decide that I am going back in time to shoot and kill my grandfather for slights that warrant such a degree of vengeance. I pop in to the time machine, go back, and shoot Grandpapa right square between the eyes. What happens if I do that??????? Peace Past, Present and Future, Marty

Marty, I think some now refer to that problem you present as the 'Bootstrap Principle', don't they? I think I mentioned before that Paramhansa Yogananda in his Autobiography of a Yogi that his guru practise cosmic travel psychically ... that might be our best hope: Though (Professor Stephen) Hawking is also now saying that if there are aliens out there we'd be best to hide from them, as they would be so technically advanced to have reached us, that their civilization could easily overwhelm ours.
