The tree of life of the Norse religion is called Yggdrasil. It represents the world and is sometimes considered to be a yew or an ash tree. Extensive lore surrounds this tree. Accounts have survived of Germanic tribes who honoured sacred trees within their societies, for example Thor’s oak, sacred groves, the sacred tree at Uppsala and the wooden Irminsul pillar. An 1847 depiction of the Norse Yggdrasil appears in the Icelandic Prose ‘The Edda’ by Oluf Olufsen Bagge.

Beautiful words and ideas Aquarius.

In thinking of the sacred symbolism of trees, I often reflect on how human(un)kind has decimated the forests of the world and continues do to do; as if in total war on Mother Nature herself.

'Father forgive them for they know not what they do', is one way of looking at this; but I fear it is all going to catch up with us one day.

Though the denial that much of 'civilization' inhabits can be seen in the ongoing rush towards urban sprawl, industrial 'develoment', and the lack of will to accept the conquequences of our actions is alarming.

A minor parochial example of that denial, is that I was moved now to come onto this thread to delete a spam advertisement that had appeared on it. Rather than join in fruitfully or pay attention to the metaphysical reflections hereabouts, clearly many are coming on here simply to distract and waste time.
