Maybe someone can help me understand this. I'm having trouble with the whole idea of collective consciousness. I guess it's just my ego limiting me, but if you evolve as a soul and become part of the collective, don't you kind if cease to exist? I think that's why the whole idea scares me. I feel like I exist because I'm aware of myself and I'm an individual part of the whole. If you merge with collective consciousness don't you cease to exist as an individual awareness with your own motives, choices, etc? Or are you still an individual but also part of the whole? Someone please help me understand this concept!

Hello Silv,

I am hoping that our "Dean Of Philosophy" (our dear Paul) comments on this.

As for me, I am always keenly concerned about those that use the term "ego". Unfortunately (and I don't mean to belittle anyones belief that differs from mine) my studies indicate that "ego" is misused and misunderstand; and that this is largely the fault of "pop" psychology and New Age philosophy. As I understand it, ego is ones sense of self worth which is far different and far removed from being egotistical (which derives from the superego ).

Thus, in my world, ego is a functional part of collective consciousness. Egotism is not.

Peace and Joy,

Dear Silverdoe,

A little something from Peter Russell that might help in the area of ego.
What we call the ego is not another separate self. It is as a mode of being that can dominate our thinking, decisions, speech, and actions, leading us to behave in ways that are uncaring, self-centered, or manipulative. Our exploration of ego would be more fruitful if we stopped using the word as a noun, which immediately implies some "thing", and instead thought of ego as a mental processes that can occupy our attention. For this a verb is a more appropriate part of speech. I am "ego-ing".

The difference is subtle, but very important. If I see the ego as a separate self, some thing, then it is easy to fall into the belief—common in many spiritual circles—that I must get rid of my ego, transcend it, or overcome it in some way. But seeing ego as a mental process, a system of thinking that I get caught in, suggests that I need to step out of that mode of thinking—to look at the world through a different lens, one less tainted by fear, insecurity and attachment.

This is a much easier and more effective approach. When I notice myself caught up in egoic thinking, rather than berating myself (or my imagined ego), I can notice what is going on and step back from it. This doesn't mean I have eliminated that way of thinking. It will surely return. And when it does, I can choose to step out of it again. Transcending the ego thus becomes an ongoing practice rather than a far-off goal.

Then there is the collective consciousness. We are all individuated units of consciousness. While we are unique individuals, we are still connected or entangled with other beings of consciousness. You will never cease to exist regardless of what realm or reality you are in. We are all multidimensional beings and exist in many different realities. Yes, all at the same time, however if we put time aside, we find that everything is happening at this moment. Past, present and future are now. Linear time is just the superglue that holds us together. I believe it was Einstein who said that linera time is present in our reality to keep everything from happening all at once.

You are a combination of everything that you've ever said or experienced in you many experiences regardless of which particular reality you were in or how many incarnations you've had. As I have learned, awareness is indwelling in our consciousness, however in the human condition, we are not aware that we are aware of our awareness. Everything is from within, don't look at external things. You will find you within.

As I've stated previously, just my 2 cents worth.............

OMG....................

Dear Ag, atomic #47, energy level 5 outer ring doe and Dr. Leeeeeeoooooooo,

So good to read something from someone whose two cents are worth a million buckeroonies!

I am not familiar with Peter Russell but I would agree with some of what you have related as to his views. From what I comment, most can intuit that I am Freud/Jungian in orientation. And, since I believe in un/preter/super/natural influences, I am more Jungian than anything else. Bottom line though is that ego is an intrinsic part of selfhood. I am purposely not delving into ego/id....yin/yang as it is premature in this discussion which has become abfab fascinating for me.

Let's look at two charismatic leaders, one hated and the other beloved......Adolph Hitler and John FitzGerald Kennedy......what might be the function of ego in these two individuals?

Let's look at two figures (fictitious) but based on everyday circumstances......Samantha is an abused woman and Ilsa She Wolf is a dominatrix......what might be the function  of ego in these two individuals?

Let's look at two humble servants, Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi.....both serve a higher calling by serving mankind.....what might be the fucntion of ego here? Are not these two the most egocentric individuals? Is/was not their belief that they (themselves) could influence human suffering for the better?

The most telling comment you made (Leo) was about Einstein and "everything happening at once". He was wrong here. I love the guy but he was, indeed, wrong. Our understanding of quantum mechanics as it relates to time continues to alter our understanidng of time itself. At absolute zero, no time exists, but all time exists before potentiality manifests, which occurs with the infinitessimal degree above absolute zero. As soon as things start moving time happens....it does not pass except for how we measure it....but it happens. The singularity event (of which I am not convinced as to exactly how it worked) caused the universe and, as a result, created ALL time and ALL OF time, AND all the potentialities that time may manifest since it all exists at the same time.

I will make a very crude, rudimentary example. Say I was born deaf, dumb and blind. Since all of time exists and all the potentialities of time along with that, I am also a person who can hear, has sensation, and can see....it is one of the potentialities for me. If I can negate the particular manifestation of "me" and re-manifest the potentiality of a hearing, sensing, sighted person...have I not accomplished what faith calls "a miracle"? Do miracles not occur?????????

All of time exists,

All of time exists at all times,

All of time exists everywhere.

Peace and Paws for Peace,

Marty, and Brainiac Cats, Luckylee Einstein, Poppyhead  Bohr

My man Marty,

Real quick and off the top of my head, it would seem to me that time is paradoxical. You state that "all the potentialities that time may manifest since it all exists at the same time." Didn't Einstein state the same thing? There is no time in the universe and linear time is only an illusion that we humans need to keep it straight. Time in the universe is not in seconds, minutes or hours. However much like Native Americans, time in the universe is determined by events. Since all time exists "at the same time", then wouldn't the past, present and future also be "at the same time". Just sayin...

People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past,
present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion. – Albert Einstein

Hi Leo....ah yes......the video you posted is familiar and I really enjoyed seeing it again.

At the singularity event, the time of which we speak occurred at that moment, and  it is all of time that occurred insofar as the extent of time in this dimension. Thus, we experience all, past, present and future since we are the product of this singularity. Yes, the past exists with the present and the future. Just ask the folks on a planet near Alpha Centurie (if only we could, 'cause they are long gone, but we see that planet just the same). The concepts are very difficult to put into words, and math is not a much better medium, yet somewhat adequate.  Time, at the threshold event, did not start as a miniscule entitiy, quite the opposite.....times' realm encompassed the enitire expansion of the universe and it's contraction back to the singular state in this dimension. Hence, the key.....time might be said to be dimensionally oriented.....and even going by today's woefully inadequate understanding of the nature of the universe, there are at least 12 states of being  that you can live at any given moment of our time.

Peace and Paws....and it seems that you are now the proud papa to a lot of paws...........I am down to the unsteady eight.....

Marty, Luckylee, Poppyhead

P.S. I saw an older cat with beautiful silver fur and black stripes; 2 brown and black striped younger cats....with the Egyptian eye make up.....and a duplicate of my best cat....Sissy Girl....not even a year old.....and I was very tempted to take them all home! Don't know what it is.....but I am forever entwined with cats.

Hey Marty et al,

I read an interesting article recently and the title was "NEWS FLASH: Time May Not Exist"
Ferenc Krausz, In his lab at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Garching, Germany, he has clocked the shortest time intervals ever observed. Krausz uses ultraviolet laser pulses to track the absurdly brief quantum leaps of electrons within atoms. The events he probes last for about 100 attoseconds, or 100 quintillionths of a second. For a little perspective, 100 attoseconds is to one second as a second is to 300 million years.

“The meaning of time has become terribly problematic in contemporary physics,” says Simon Saunders, a philosopher of physics at the University of Oxford. “The situation is so uncomfortable that by far the best thing to do is declare oneself an agnostic.” As Dean Radin stated in the video, "there is no clock ticking out there in the world".

According to one quantum physicist “We never really see time,” “We see only clocks. If you say this object moves, what you really mean is that this object is here when the hand of your clock is here, and so on. We say we measure time with clocks, but we see only the hands of the clocks, not time itself. And the hands of a clock are a physical variable like any other. So in a sense we cheat because what we really observe are physical variables as a function of other physical variables, but we represent that as if everything is evolving in time.

The question is "What is the self without time?" As stated in the video "time is just the superglue that keeps our stories together." Can you imagine what it would be like if everything happened at once in this physical reality.

The problem, in brief, is that time may not exist at the most fundamental level of physical reality.

I'm back with the many feline friends, for how long I'm uncertain. I was recently reminded by a non-physical (in this reality) being, "Everything has a season." (The Byrds Turn, Turn, Turn)

I know what you mean about cats......

Hi Leo.....currently experiencing sound at the 741 megahertz level....borderline invigorating and contemplative.....as an oddity, if we go a half down, it is the 1950's movie sound for flying saucers!

From your post:
"The problem, in brief, is that time may not exist at the most fundamental level of physical reality"

In our physics....at absolute zero, all atomic motion stops and hence there is no time as we currently measure it. Therefore, if I freeze the quartz in Greenwich, we should lose time...but "we" will not, as our ticky-tocks will tick and tock anyway. But, my question is what truly happens if I could freeze the natural oscillation of quartz?

Our brains are geared to consider time as interval-centric. We measure it in passing....and we tremble in measuring it's continued passage.....hence the cards "So You Are 30, 40, 50....you noitce they stop at 50 since card companies figure they ain't gonna sell a lot of 60 70 80 + cards. BUT, we do not understand the damage this does to us....it binds and confines us to fulfill the progression of some stupid cards. You might live to be 100+ but the cards (which reflect society) want you to progressively age to the established limit of the cards they can sell.

I was about to continue.....but I think I will try another thread to get to the truth of things......

Peace My Brother,

Marty y Las Gatas

Oh what an interesting thread! Marty I get what you said WAAAY up there about Ego. It's a natural part of us, Egotism is not I remember it from 12th grade psychology class. That's as much as I know. I do know that in the metaphysical/ "new age" circles it always seemed odd to me that they are trying to do away with Ego. How can one function without some sense of self?

Anyway, I'm more enthralled with all of the time discussions. I have nothing to add because I haven't done any extensive research or worked in a field where any of this is discussed. When I first signed up for these courses, I thought for some reason we would get into more Quantum Physics and such, (and more of the scientific side to metaphysics). I'm not very well versed in it(Physics or Quantum Physics), but what I read about it seems to resonate.

Anyway, I realize my post adds nothing. Just wanted to say I read the thread and it's all so fascinating

Disa,

Of course you add to the thread. Your comments about ego are right on. The term ego certainly should not be thought of as a noun but more as a verb. When we codsider the ego as a part of who we are, as a part of our brain or mind, we get hung up. Ego is not a physical part of our anatomy. It's a function of the self. Over use of the mind and ego is a dis-ease as Eckhart Tolle states. We need to be the watcher of the mind and consider what it is that we are thinking at all times. Keeping track of the ego and what it is doing is an important part of consciousness. Consciousness prevails throughout the universe and we are all connected by it. Our thoughts become things, so we need to watch those thoughts. We don't need to do away with ego, just keep an eye out for what it is doing either to us or for us.

Thank you, Leo. I agree.

Isn't it great that people like Ekhart Tolle are coming into the mainstream to help illuminate what I think we already know subconsciously in a way that appeals to the masses? When I hear him speak I always feel like he is saying what I have always known. Living in the present is one of his concepts with which I am always struggling. I look too far ahead, but at least I'm no longer looking back

Disa,

Spiritual teachers with non-dual leanings often say that there is no path to enlightenment. There is nowhere to get to; you are already enlightened, you just do not know it. There is no need for a technique or practice; they will only keep your mind trapped in the illusion of relative phenomena. Do not meditate; do nothing.

In this sense there is nothing to do. The very opposite: it is our doing that is the problem. When we let go of all attachments as to how things should or could be, we wake up to the truth of what is. Even the word enlightenment is misleading; it implies some other, "higher", state of consciousness. This is what makes the statement "you are already enlightened" so confusing. But to say you are already awake, but not awake to your own wakefullness, or you are already aware, but not fully aware of awareness, makes more sense.

So yes Disa, you do know and have always known. We just don't know that we know. Everthing is within consciousness and we are that very consciousness. There is no higher state of consciousness, it is what it is. We can however state that we have a higher being, it is through this higher being that we can become aware of our awareness. We are all consciousness.

The way I understand it in an ontological sense is that the cognitive powers we possess are but a minute fraction "on loan" so to speak from the Collective Consciousness. This would extend logically to even the smallest animals like spiders. flies, birds, mice. etc., but each simply using the required consciousness to be a mouse, spider, fly, whatever. And we are no different, using the required consciousness to do human things, like understanding why they have to stop all futures trading if they close the New York Markets this morning. I used that because that is what I was just thinking about, seeing immediately why they had to shut down the futures... especially volatility futures because they know I scare them... but that's just me.

Oh darn, and there goes that ego. But if you don't believe me, scroll back through my old posts or  simply plot ($UVOL-$DVOL) [winners - losers], and watch what happened to them this August when the old inner consciousness borrowed a little "What if?" and dropped it on their order desk. "What if you could devise a way to profit exponentially from fear and/or greed, and aim it at Wall Street via Chicago using parameters derived from weaknesses and strengths inherent in a Fiat Currency?" Ouch! But what is even more profound, and I was even going to use as a thesis topic, was "Could you affect the system simply using a theory, and not even spend one cent?" Could a simple idea be more powerful than all the tea in China and so much so that even simulating it gave them an almost fatal Real Gold face palm? Apparently, yep!!! Really nothing new except that it deals with Money. If I hold a rubber band armed to snap you on the nether regions, there would likely be instant real world results from that too!

Actually, now they are clarifying they can't trade the futures without the underlying markets open due to Sandy, but that still doesn't erase all of August. So, Q.E.D. But then using the same logic, why would I need a piece of paper saying I had a Masters and a PhD if I could create the illusion of them in the same cloud manifesting itself in real world results for verification? Ow! My inner Consciousness hurts! Nahhhh.... The sheepskin would be easier on the neurons in the long run. lol

And I see the new message board doesn't recognize a lot of my old weird characters on the Internet (see the sig below... That used to say "Engineer" or sort of...)

There certainly is a lot of interesting discussion going on. Thanks for all the replies. When I say ego, I too mean a way of thinking you can get caught up in or being trapped in a negative pattern. I liked the comment about the ego not being something we need to transcend. I guess what I meant was I have a hard time with the concept of group consciousness because I cling to the egoistic thinking of the 'self' instead of the 'us'. I understand and am comfortable with the idea of everything being an individual part of the whole. I compare it to the many leaves that make up a tree. It makes it easy for me to understand. I guess where I get lost is group consciousness and the idea that all of us are really one consciousness and that eventually we return to collective consciousness. Wouldn't that mean you cease to exist as an individual consciousness, therefore the 'you' that you cling to ceases to be? Ughhh, sorry, this concept is just mind boggling to me and I have such a hard time understanding it. I guess as long as I know I'll never cease to be as an individual part of the whole I'm cool . The 'everything is connected' thing and the 'we are all one' thing I can dig. Ahhhh, I guess I'm just not grasping it..more growth.

Silverdoe,

I understand your concern, however you will always remain an individual unit of consciousness. Regardless of what reality you're in, you will always be an individual. There is a group that I'm aware of that calls themselves the collective WE. A large group of entities that work together to help any being that asks. Now I know that in the rather large group, which by the way do not refer to themselves by individual names but they work together as individuals for the collective good. There is one who did identify himself by name. So you see, no matter where in the universe you find yourself, you will always be you. It is your individual consciousness that is part of the collective.

You are also multidimensional, meaning there is more to you than what you see in the mirror. You actually exist on and in many varied realities and dimensions. You are but an aspect of a multidimensional being. Be assured that you are you and will always be you.

Silllver......

As you can tell from the posts, each of us has a distinct personality and ego. As you also can tell from where we post and why we post, all of us are deeply concerned, caring individuals. Since we are here, hosted at UMS, we all strive to understand the same things that you wrestle with. My advice is to not give yourself a headache trying to fathom that which might well be unfathomable. At any given moment, light may come into your life that will bring you boundless joy. You just don't know when it will happen.....but keeping an open mind, an intellectual curiosity and a free flowing chi will allow it to come. To me, free flowing chi is the most important element.

Peace,

Marty and Luckylee and Poppyhead

Two things I have noticed. No.1 is that all that is left of my silly characters sig consists of international monetary symbols now. This is kind of ironic given that the whole point is to eschew monetary wealth for stuff that is free, yet priceless, like a Mastercard Commercial. Oooops... there it goes again. Monetary allegories are such an ingrained part of the English language, even though they are derived from a shady yet storied science pillared on a fraud concocted by 17th century German Goldsmiths, and as such are also a big part of the ASCII Character set.

No. 2 is that most perceived problems that people have are caused by money troubles. Money ironically indirectly even caused the problems in my sig, But "x" amount of money wouldn't solve that problem instantly. Same thing with some physical problems or injury, but only until you need "x" for an operation, groceries, medicine, or whatever.

No.3 is that Money is usually no problem until you need some!

I had a friend in need of money ask me if there was some way for a person of meager means to use the stuff I was showing him. At the time there appeared not to be. But things have changed. He was pretty surprised that 6 months later I had actually put some time into his problem, other than just recommending that he stop playing the Lottery and Video Poker machines, saying that I would never trust any machine designed by an engineer and mathematician to make money for the government. As you mentioned, there are ETF's that do not have a track record yet, but look promising. XIV (The Credit Suisse stock symbol and not the Roman Numeral "14" does what I did. I wonder how long until they make it illegal? VXX is the hedge for that symbol, but short term due to excessive ETF time erosion of value from "Contango," or cost of carry. If you have a broker that allows you to short sell that VXX, that accomplishes roughly the same thing. But the two together flatlines . They both key on the S&P Volatility Index, or the so called "Fear Index." When the stock market crashes, VXX (fear) goes up and the reverse XIV (calm) goes down. I wait for a big kerfuffle and panic, then invest in calm hopefully when it maxes out, Works so far. Volatility does not behave like standard symbols though as it is an underlying symbol used to price options and set the width of the Bid-Ask spread on EVERYTHING in the S&P 500. Also recently, they just introduced the sorely needed VN Futures a few months back for Nasdaq Volatility, which is the first step to building this whole process for the Nasdaq Index.

Silverdoe100 - 10/19/2012 4:31 PM Maybe someone can help me understand this.
Human And Divine Parents

The way I understand the matter is as follows: Because humankind is a microcosm of the macrocosm, everything that is happening in the Heavens also takes place in us. ‘As above, so below – as below, so above’. Because of this every child born on the Earth plane has to have a female and a male parent, even if they never intended to stay together. The core of each one of us is spirit and soul. Whose child are they? Our true parents are the Great White Spirit, Father/Mother of all life. The masculine and feminine aspects of the Divine, God and Goddess are one. They work together harmoniously and are in perfect balance with each other.

Everything in the whole of Creation consists of the same duality that is in God. That’s why there are two parts of everything in our world, including our physical bodies, the outer and its inner self. Our body has an interesting story to tell. Although most of its vital organs are there in duplicate, we have only one heart. It is the centre of our whole earthly being and the seat of love, in humankind as it is in God. Another component of our duality is on the one hand our limited and finite, small and frightened self. This is the ego that is afraid of change and wishes to cling to that which is known, the past. On the other hand there is our Highest Self, also known as true Ego. Infinite, eternal and immortal, it is indestructible and knows no fear. It is pure consciousness, it always has been and will continue to be in all Eternity. As this part knows our whole evolutionary pathway, it constantly tries to encourage us to go forward, to reach upwards and beyond the comprehension of our earthly self. It wants us to aim and long for ever higher new experiences, horizons and the future.

Regardless of the fact that at times we are temporarily encased in matter, like God, the essence of our being always was and will be spirit and pure consciousness, at one with and part of God and all life. When the human spirit and soul wishes to enter into another material existence, it has to create itself another vehicle, a physical body. A mother and father substitute for our true parents have to be found, a woman and a man, through whom another earthly form can be created, so that – in due course – a new physical body will be born which, in the fullness of time, has to die again.

Though these bodies are finite, the consciousness within constantly seeks experiences that assists in its growth and expansion. Thus, all human spirits and souls evolve in matter and the matter they dwell in from time to time progresses  and moves a bit forwards with each one. All cells of every physical body are imbued with consciousness. When they are finally returned to the Earth, these cells help the planet itself with its development upwards and onwards on the spiritual spiral of life. Nothing in the whole of Creation is ever wasted. All things are incessantly recycled and used over and over again.

Silverdoe, Aqua et al,

The second of the seven Universal Laws tells us "As above, so below; as below, so above". This means that there is "harmony, agreement and correspondence" between the physical, mental and spiritual realms. There is no separation since everything in the Universe, including you, originates from the One Source. The same pattern is expressed on all planes of existence from the smallest electron to the largest star and vice versa.

The fourth of the seven Universal Laws tells us that "Everything is dual, everything has poles; everything has its pair of opposites; opposites are identical in nature, but different in degree". Things that appear as opposites are in fact only two extremes of the same thing. For instance, heat and cold may appear to be opposites at first glance, but in truth they are simply varying degrees of the same thing. The same applies to love and hate, peace and war, positive and negative, good and evil, yes and no, light and darkness, energy and matter.

This Principle of Duality may appear to be very real in your life but it operates only in the physical and mental realms, not in the spiritual realm where All is One. As it says in the Bhagavad-Gita, "God is Above the Opposites". By always placing the all-powerful, all-knowing Great Spirit of which you are a part behind your every thought, statement and action, and by always focusing on the "good", even when things appear to be going "bad", then in time you will rise above the Law of Polarity.

The last of the seven Universal Laws tells us that "Gender is in everything; everything has its masculine and feminine principles". This mutable Universal Law is evident throughout creation in the so-called opposite sexes found not only in human beings but also in plants, minerals, electrons and magnetic poles to name but a few. Everything and everyone contains both masculine and feminine elements. Among the outward expressions of feminine qualities are love, patience, intuition and gentleness and of masculine qualities are energy, self reliance, logic and intellect. Know that within every woman lie all the latent qualities of a man, and within every man those of a woman. When you know this you will know what it means to be complete.

We are individuated units of consciousness connected to the collective consciousness. We are entangled with the universal One Source. As stated above, there is no separation in the universe as everything originates from the One Source.

Thank you for that Leo, it's just the kind of straightforward assurance I needed sometimes we do need that huh lol. Since posting this question, I've been continuing deeper and deeper into spirituality, and I feel like I'm gaining a much higher understanding of these concepts <3 meditation is also helping a great deal. Thanks everyone for all of your generous replies. I feel much more comfortable with collective consciousness, and the universal truth of everything being individual AND one at the same time. I now see that it doesn't have to be one or the other, this truth or that one...both can be truth I also received my reiki one attunement two days ago, and am quite shocked and excited by the results! I can actually FEEL energy between my hands now! This is all so new and exciting :D
