     This is truly one of the strangest and mysterious carols ever written................and it is quite haunting:

 

 

O come, O come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel
Shall come to thee, O Israel.
 


O come, Thou Rod of Jesse, free
Thine own from Satan's tyranny
From depths of Hell Thy people save
And give them victory o'er the grave
Rejoice! Rejoice! Emmanuel

O come, Thou Day-Spring, come and cheer
Our spirits by Thine advent here
Disperse the gloomy clouds of night

Location: United Kingdom		This has always been one of my favourite carols;

well, when I say, 'always', I am not sure how far I am going back ...

then again, when I say 'carol', that is equally equivocal, as I seem to remember from my old school hymn books that technically this is an 'advent hymn';

ie, a carol is, on those lines, a song of praise for the birth of the infant Jesus, omnipotent, omniscient all-creator/creatrix God/Goddess Divine made human bairn/babe from her own free volitional will, becoming helpless new-born in the hands of woman and man (and in a cowshed to boot)

whereas, O Come O Come Emmanuel, in advent, still sings to me of the longing for the Chosen One to come; like in old friend John W. Kelly's post, always for me rang more of the ancient Hebraic psalms and longing for the one for whom we yearn, yet whom we are never sure will arrive ....

So, ok, to take the imagery further, and sorry if I sound preachy, but the Christian incarnation idea means that somehow we are left to do it ourselves: for the God in each of us and you and me and ourselves too :-

Yet so though that links with all this Aadvayita incarnating idealizing imagery that we are all the One anyway, just need to unlearn what we have learnt (oops, here comes Socrates..) get back to the Garden (thanks, dearest Joni Mitchell)

then do it all again ....

That was wonderful! What a fanastic voice she has and those instruments I have to look into, very different and otherworldly I have to agree! Thank you for sharing it! :-)
