| Hi Aquarius
Not so much a renewal of hope not being wanted (a strange idea to imply!), but did you recall that a Hope thread has been around before? I will reply to that thread now, to maintain a symmetry of sorts. I remembered it and did a search.
Though as has been pointed out before, transplanting chunks of material that is available elsewhere and reposting it here with repeated signposts to one's own web-material also uploaded elsewhere can be against the spirit of a discussion board.
Blessings

Seems to me at a quick scan of the two versions of Schiller's poem presented that there are differences between the two ... with so much material offered it is quite hard to critique in a reflective way as there are some points with which one might agree and/or disagree or/and vice versa as well as respond from one's own internal world .... and from one's own possibly quite difference perspective(s).
We have also trodden some of these well-worn paths before ...
Best

| To clarify:
As this is a University discussion board, and in terms of instilling the concept - and academic discipline - of research methods is that in presenting any kind of material for reading and reflection, it is generally held to be good and necessary practice to examine and investigate what has been undertaken and offered up before.
Otherwise, one might post anything irrespective of paying any attention to what has been said before (on the discussion board here, or more widely and going forward, in terms of written material or previous reflection). One also might not be paying due attention and giving due credit to what others have said and offered up before for critical examination.
It has also been suggested before now (not by me, but I think I can remember by whom), that initial topic posts in the public forum might have a word limit, so as to encourage concise expression; say 500 words.
I am reflecting on that currently, so would welcome any views.
In the meantime, a reminder of once and a while back when hope was around before as a topic, I also recall that Pandora's Box came up, as an interesting offering from the pantheon of Greek myth.

Location: NE Ohio | I am jumping in because our discussion board is meant to be about the discussion of metaphysics and the classes offered at UMS and not by any means represent the imagination or faith of one person's belief system. When it starts to get shoved in faces, as if represented by any authority other than the author, is misleading. Just place at the bottom, these are my personal feelings and I am NOT a UMS student, or you would understand more about what we are talking about. People are not coming to the school of Aquarius! They are coming for by far more than you could comprehend. So..... if you want to keep posting as if you are of some authoritative.... take some classes. Sign up.... or go else where to preach. |

| Hello Aquarius
Thanks for request.
In case you were wondering, I had not deleted this thread yet in case of any other views about limiting the length of postings, as well as points raised by others who had chipped in here; deleting the thread would delete everyone else's comments made in good faith.
I will keep an eye on it!
All the best to you too

Location: United Kingdom | Thank you for your response, Ophiucus. All I have to say is:
Sagt es niemand, nur den Weisen, Weil die Menge gleich verhöhnet. . .
Which means:
As the mass of people loves to jeer at Things it fails to understand, Tell nobody except those who are truly wise . . .
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe 1749-1832
It may interest you that Goethe and Schiller, each in his own right, are held in as high esteem in the German speaking parts of our world as Shakespeare in the English speaking ones.
God bless and all the best to everybody, Aquarius * * *

Location: United Kingdom | Hmmm ... fascinating, this thread has had 73 views in its short time span ...
I thought we had referred to Goethe on the Board before (not least in relation to the Faust myth/legend and metaphysical aspects) .... so taking a cue from O's thinking, I did a quick search and came up with around 10 previous postings/threads ... but my PC is not letting me copy a screenshot ... doh!
I tried also attaching it as a file, but it is too big for the site to allow it to link .... sorry about that ... so for anyone interested, do a search using Goethe and you will find some very interesting results.
Although going to your quote Aquarius, I am somewhat baffled as to what comparitor you are making, or if you would like us to draw any inference.
Happy weekend all
Paul

| Dear All
In case of further archival research interest on this board, Schiller has also made an appearance before, in a thread called Food for Thought, which was frozen in 2015 by me as it seemed to have run its course and was not going in positive directions.
Kind regards
Ophiucus

Location: NE Ohio | I had hoped my post was not offensive, its just that this forum is based solely for the purpose of UMS philosophy and discussions should be about those type of topics. I did enjoy many posts made. So.... I am adding a disclaimer that posts made here are not always made by a UMS student and do not represent UMS in any way. |

| Dear Aquarius
Your post invites a variety of responses, free associations such as
- yes, and?
- is that a question or a statement?
- is that you or Goethe?
- if the latter (Goethe), is there a context (eg, his own thinking, or a character in a play, for example, Shakespeare is often cited by many, when in fact it is one of his characters who are speaking, not necessarily Will himself): one supposes one might 'Google' that phrase, but one does not expect to have to, unless directed thereto by the person offering the post. That is for many reasons, not least because we are our own witnesses, and 'Google' cannot necessarily be relied upon thereby as an authorised source.
- is that (one assumes it is) a translation?
- I can personally think of more frightening things than what is proposed in your post.
- is that related to the thread/s here, or to current world events?
I have also reflected on your earlier quotation from Goethe, which has for me other and older resonances also.
In terms of discussion board respects, am not sure what you make of DocJl's proposal as you have not commented on it.

| I am freezing this thread at this point as it has taken on the form of assertion rather than discussion.
