Falon Gong: The Exercises
"My Perspective" by William Timm

There are 5 exercises:
The Thousand Hands
Falun Standing Meditation
Cosmic Extremes
Heavenly Circulation
The Divine Powers Meditation

Exercise is calisthenics is it not? You get the heart rate up, burn some calories and get the circulation flowing right? Falun Gong is a form of "Qi Gong." The movements are based on ancient acupuncture sciences. The movements purify and slow the body's metabolic functions, and develops, preserves and conserves energy. However, Falun Gong goes beyond the physical strength (or chi) level in order to develop (Gong) virtue which is primarily done by integrating the principals of Truthfulness, Kindness and Tolerance in all aspects of daily life.

The exercises are somewhat based on the Taoist perspective as seeing the body as a universe among many universes. The first exercise, "The Thousand Hands," uses stretching and relaxation movements to gradually unlock, clear and balance the acupuncture energy channels.

The "Falun Standing Meditation" is simply a meditation exercise which involves holding the hands over certain energy channels in order to awaken energy and wisdom. I believe it also automatically regulates blood pressure and triggers readjustment or alignment of the musculo-skeletal system. It is a simple but powerful endurance exercise.

The "Cosmic Extremes Exercise" helps to purify the body using energies from the cosmic extremes. Mr. Li Hongzhi's Book "Zhuan Falun" explains this in detail. He is always asking one to consider things deeply and not just take his word for it, for we all have unique ways of understanding. When he talks about this exercise he states, "one could think about the vastness of the cosmic extremes and only superficially comprehend a portion of it".

The fifth exercise, "Divine Powers Meditation," involves mudras or hand signs that symbolize various things such as compassion, the onset of cultivation and weeding out superficiality of the self. The effect aids in strengthening intuition, clairvoyance and energy levels according to one's virtue (Gong) level.

The idea of directing cosmic energy through the body may seem a bit dreamy but scientists have proven there are other dimensions. When you tune in your favorite radio station you don't see the radio waves but you know your radio is receiving them. We have cells that have similar organs like those in our bodies but we can only see them with a microscope. Our cells are made of atoms that the naked eye doesn't see, yet science has perceived them. Since science studies only those things that have "concrete" physical manifestations, perhaps there are countless undiscovered dimensions...

So these are the exercises. Each one of us will experience different things according to his or her level. Through the principles in the book "Zhuan Falun" and following these exercises, there is the possibility of a path for reaching excellent health and spiritual attainment.
