About Consumer Alert
We at UMS have been very patient with this for several years, but now it has come to our attention that we must speak up and address this situation on our website. We must now say something because people are getting very confused by a particular school saying certain things about UMS. We understand the shock they must have gone through once our school and others started opening to the public. Suddenly there are so many choices for people within the past couple of years. We have been hoping that sooner than later the other school would get used to the idea that they are not the only metaphysical school anymore, even though they have been in that position for decades. We are disappointed that we have to do this and it breaks our heart to have to write this public announcement addressing what they have said. We cannot allow them to practice harmfulness unchecked anymore.
We believe in peace and compassion and a spirit of non-competition in the metaphysical field. We tried being quiet and giving them time to adjust, but it has become their sales tactics to say negative things about UMS that simply are not true as soon as people call them. On the other hand, it has been our consistent policy in our office to never say anything bad about them. We believe in walking our talk and practicing non-harmfulness.
We Hope Peace Will Prevail
We would personally like to see peace prevail and all schools co-exist in unity in our efforts to assist people in their awakening. If the metaphysical community cannot exist peacefully together, then what hope have we for world peace? If another metaphysical school cannot practice kindness and fairness toward another school, then how can nations get along?
We have always spoken only of our own program and what we have to offer, and we have always said something nice about other schools, like: "All metaphysical schools are assisting humankind in it's awakening, and we are sure they are nice folks too. You must choose according to your heart and see which school 'feels’ right for you." We have practiced kindness every step of the way.
There Are Plenty Of Students For All Schools
We believe that the right students will be guided to the right school for them, so we do not have a "hard-sell" attitude. We take a position of being in service and inviting potential students to our program, rather than trying to talk them out of other schools through manipulative slander techniques. If another school is the right school for a particular person, we do not want to get in the way of that person's highest good. We only want to have students who truly desire to be in our school, not people who have been tricked with negative campaigning. It takes many paths for all people to reach their true self, and each school has something unique about its offerings.
Even now, we are not going to say anything bad about any other school, but we are going to tell you some facts about what is going on in a fair, compassionate way. We hope to end the confusion here. We simply do not have time to address this email by email anymore. We are sorry that it came to this, but we must reserve staff hours for our students' needs and we hope this announcement will clear up some of the confusion that has been going on for years. We will address each of the points that the particular school we are speaking of makes against UMS one at a time in the following paragraphs.
UMS Is Not A Copy Of Any Other School
First of all, we did not copy any of their courses or their curriculum. To be honest, we feel that we have created a much different curriculum that has more information in it. We have a different level of standards for metaphysical training. Their entire Bachelor's program consists of what equals only two of our courses and amounts to a course on "positive thinking" for the most part. That teaching is definitely important, but is only one of our courses among more than 80 courses. Their Master's program is also the size of only one of our courses and continues the concept of positive thinking. Their courses are short and come from the viewpoint of one person, the founder of the school. They have not been cross-referenced with other people's writings, teachings or points of view. Nor do they offer meditations with any of their courses.
Our courses were heavily researched. All perspectives of famous authors and teachers are presented for the student, not just the founder's point of view, and a team of over 40 writers put all the UMS courses together. UMS was in the research and development phase for many years before it opened to the public. Our courses are also accompanied by approximately 65 meditations on CDs. This way the student gets the experiential aspect of the material as if he or she were in a live class situation. The meditations bring the concepts being taught into the student’s direct experience. These are the differences between the schools. We created courses that have never existed in their curriculum. It would be impossible to copy anything from them since they only have the equivalent of 3 of our courses as their entire curriculum, and none of them are the same.
The particular university we are speaking of has also told people that we copied their other materials, like admissions requirements, descriptions of school procedures, withdrawal policies, etc. This is also untrue. These are just normal business practices done by all schools. It is normal for all the policies to be the same. This would be like saying that because So-And-So University requires a high school diploma for admission, then other schools are copying by having the same policy. This is a normal business procedure, not copying. All colleges talk about their policies, their requirements, careers, courses, and other pertinent issues that a school must address in its literature.
The particular metaphysical school being responded to here says that UMS copied its name. This is not true. We do teach metaphysics, and we use the word metaphysical in our name, but this is not a copy of any school's name. Our name is actually University of Metaphysical Sciences, and we feel it is fair to use that word in describing what we offer. In fact there are lots of schools using the words metaphysics and metaphysical in their name. We are not the only ones. What if there is a school that calls itself the University of Business? That would be like saying that no other school could have the word "business" in its name even though it teaches business. No one has a monopoly or copyright on the word metaphysics or metaphysical, nor could one be obtained any more than the word business could be copyrighted.
Their university is attempting to obtain a monopoly on the metaphysical education market by saying they are the only real metaphysical school and all others are copies. They are having a difficult time dealing with the fact that they no longer have the monopoly they had for several decades. We feel that all schools offering a metaphysical education have their place in the world and the right people will be guided to the school that resonates with them the most. This process should not be interfered with.
The other school says that they are the only "real" university that teaches metaphysics. This is an inaccurate statement. That would be similar to Harvard University saying that it is the only "real" university that teaches medicine or law just because it has been around longer. Our courses are quite real, our university is quite real, and our degrees are just as real as any other religious school that offers religious degrees. They have claimed that their degrees are valid but ours are not in other countries. This is simply not true. No school can offer degrees without proper approval, and that is what makes a school and its degrees real. Both schools have exactly the same registrations with federal and state agencies, as all religious schools must, which makes the degrees offered by both schools exactly the same validity.
There is one difference, however, and that has to do with accreditation. We have sought accreditation with agencies that accredit many schools and practitioners. The other school we are speaking of in this document has created its own agency and simply accredits itself and its graduates who continue to pay for the service. This is not true accreditation. To seek accreditation is to look to an agency that will compare you to your peers. It is not something you do yourself for your own school.
UMS Is New & It's Great!
The other metaphysical school states that if a university is not 50 years old, it is not a good university. Age of a university, or any business for that matter, is not a determination as to whether a school is good or not. Being the oldest in the business is not equivalent to being the best. In fact, a lot of new information has come along in the past 50 years, and UMS has incorporated it into the curriculum. It happens all the time that a new business comes along that might out-do its predecessors, so being the oldest is not necessarily going to be the tell tale factor as to what is a great school. Many new universities and businesses have come along, and often they are an improvement on the ones that came before them.
Some people have noticed the constantly fluctuating prices that the particular metaphysical university we are speaking of offers. This is happening because they are trying to find the right price for their program now that the times have changed. Our school and other schools offer more comprehensive curriculums and that is why they are able to drop their prices so far below the prices of others. At one point, their price had dropped to $490. If you are paying more than that, you are in one of their fluctuating price moments. You receive a small amount of Xeroxed pages in their curriculum compared to a whole bookshelf of materials with meditation CDs in ours.
If a person wants a cheap metaphysical degree, anyone can get one for about $200 from diploma mill universities that can be found on the internet. If a person wants a great education from a great school that has a wonderful reputation, then you must think about being willing to pay more. University of Metaphysical Sciences truly delivers the value of your tuition and course materials fees, and we stand behind our students even after they graduate. Graduates do not have to continue to pay us in order to have our support.
Their university makes students sign a contract for the payment plans, and that is binding whether a student finishes his or her studies or not. Our students are free to do whatever they decide is best for them without binding contracts that prevent them from following their own good. We are in the spirit of service and go above and beyond the call of duty to cater to all our students' needs. Life changes happen, and not everyone can always be focused on studying. We allow our students the freedom they need when things comes up. We allow long leaves of absence if that is necessary in a student's life and we do not require them to pay if they are on break. We practice the integrity we teach.
What Kind Of People Do You Want To Learn From?
When you ask yourself the question pertaining to which school you want to go to, we always encourage you to look in your heart and ask yourself what feels right. The energy of the school is what you must look at and decide if that is the energy you want to be influenced by. Do you want to be influenced by people who use negative techniques against others or would you rather be influenced by love, compassion, and non-harmfulness? We hope the other university that has been slandering UMS will stop this aggressive tactic soon. Perhaps posting this announcement will help with that. In the meantime, we encourage you to examine carefully the statements that you hear from them and see for yourself if they really feel true.
A school is only as good as its reputation, and University of Metaphysical Sciences is fast attaining a very good reputation. All we can say is that sooner or later a school's reputation becomes quite clear. Your degree is only as good as the school you graduated from. When someone wants to check up on your credentials, which website do you want to send them to? What kind of people do you want them to speak with? Which school do you want to be associated with for the rest of your life? This is a very important choice you are making.
Visualize Peace In The Metaphysical Community
We encourage you to visualize peace in the metaphysical community concerning schools, centers, and people all over the world. These sorts of scenarios of attack against others do happen in metaphysical communities and circles, and it is unfortunate. The old paradigm way of doing business should not apply to metaphysical types of businesses, but it seems to still have a foothold in the human psyche, no matter how much spiritual work has been done. We had hoped that peace would have come for those at the other school who have been upset about our existence. We tried to tread as lightly as possible, and we have given ample time for them to calm down about the fact that they are not the only metaphysics school in the world now. There is room on the planet for all the metaphysical schools. We have been at peace about it and treated the situation very gently. We hope that soon they can do the same. It would be nice if all schools just spoke about what they offer and refrain from slandering others.
It breaks our hearts that it has come to this point where we feel that we finally have to defend against slander coming from another school. However, it has helped cut down on the nearly daily emails we used to receive about these matters. All questions about this are answered here and we are now able to focus our attention and energy on the thousands of people who are connected to University of Metaphysical Sciences and enjoy our services, from enrollment, retreats and workshops to our free meditations, discussion forum, newsletter, video satsangs, affirmations table and questions that are constantly flowing into our inbox. This time has been dearly needed to work on these other things. We are sorry it has come to this, but we simply cannot continue to answer all these questions email by email anymore because UMS is growing in leaps and bounds and we must keep up with the growth. We do know that our program speaks for itself, but we also have an obligation to the public to answer these questions.
We hope this comes to a peaceful resolution soon and that the founder of the other metaphysics university can relax heart and mind at some point and let go. It is obviously God’s intention that there be several metaphysical schools in the world now and more choices for spiritual seekers. UMS has answered this call in the mass consciousness for a really good metaphysical school to be available. In fact, several schools are using our format and model themselves after our school because we have set new standards in this field that others must aspire to if they are to exist. We don’t see this as a bad thing. It is just a sign of the times. Humanity is now awakening and searching for the deeper answers in life. Schools, teachers and books are now appearing to meet that need. We are very glad to be a part of that change in humanity’s path. May all schools live and let others live in peace and harmony and truly focus on what it is we are here to do.
